2 stars! Though entertaining, Mr. X completely missed the mark as a dark read for me. Additionally, the book kept running in circles and Mr. X’s reasoning for revenge was lame. Sorry, there aren’t pictures here! The story is a twisted romance between Jay, the druggie heroine and Mr. X, a deadly assassin who hates her for some unknown reason. I honestly can’t say more about the book plot because a fairly large portion is them having super hot, kinky sex. The way the story unfolded, however, was ela 2 stars! Sorry, there aren’t pictures here! The story is a twisted romance between Jay, the druggie heroine and Mr. X, a deadly assassin who hates her for some unknown reason. I honestly can’t say more about the book plot because a fairly large portion is them having super hot, kinky sex. The way the story unfolded, however, was elaborate and well-thought out – dual POVs, specific time stamps that don’t make much sense in the beginning but will after the first quarter of the book, and appropriate flashback scenes that provided additional information about these characters. Unfortunately, I had problems with the book from the beginning up to the end and while I desperately wanted to be fully invested in the story, I just couldn’t. (view spoiler)[First, I really don’t like it when characters talk in their heads a lot, especially if they’re saying the same thing in ten different ways. The author is clearly a very talented writer and her words are descriptive and evocative, yet they “tell” more than they “show.” Example: “…it surprises me that he has clearly deviated from his plan. His plan to kill me. He didn’t. He still hasn’t. That’s my way in.” I would like to point out that as the reader, I can clearly see that Mr. X didn’t kill her, hasn’t killed her, and will probably never kill her. I can make my own inferences from actions so I felt like reiterations such as the one above were unnecessary. This next thing I’m about to say is strictly my own opinion but this book strongly reminded me of the Monsters in the Dark series by Pepper Winters. I understand that for a sub-genre like dark romance, many themes will converge and similarities are to be expected; however, when I’m constantly reminded of other books in my current read, it’s kinda hard to be invested in the story. The bird symbolism was cutting it close as well. “I’m not just a monster, I’m your monster.” Additionally, there are some scenes in this book that are absolutely preposterous and just don’t make sense. There’s this one part where Mr. X visits an informant to learn who hired a hit on Jay and with the torture, the screaming, etc…it’s odd that no one noticed the noise. The author notes that the guy lives in downtown San Antonio too…there’s another scene where he threatens a prostitute to do his dirty work and the way that part was told, it just made me go WTF. I mean, in real life, you don’t just wave a gun and expect the person to magically obey your every whim once you turn around and leave. Of course the person would do the sane thing and call police or not bother to show up afterwards. But no, since this is fiction, it absolutely makes sense that the prostitute does everything he tells her to do. Lastly but most importantly, Mr. X’s basis for his entire revenge against Jay is ridiculous. Basically, he blames her for something she has no part in. Here’s Mr. X’s reasoning: “You seduced me. You should’ve known.” Basically, he got facially disfigured and scarred because he had feelings for her when they were young and while he should have focused 100% of the resentment on the people that hurt him, he directed all his hate on Jay. ………………………… I’m really starting to notice a trend in “dark romance” stories such as this one – the build up and tension may be fantastic but when it gets down to the reasoning it always sucks ass. Take Raw, Bang, and Number Thirteen for an example. There’s also an added twist to why Jay should hate Mr. X and when he reveals that to her he completely trivializes it. Makes a joke of it and expects it to be okay. Honestly, the whole part where he reveals his reasoning just pissed me off completely. I felt cheated. The author dangled his BIG OL’ SECRET for the entire book: “There aren’t a lot of people I don’t hate, but I hate her especially.” “You’re here because you were meant to be here. The choices you made all led you to this point in time. There is no denying that this is your fault too.” “I wanted her to live with the pain, the regret, the anger, the hurt…” So I really expected the reason to be GOOD, you know? Not some flimsy excuse to enact diabolical revenge on the poor girl. (hide spoiler)] However, I did enjoy the ending and I loved it when the author finally revealed Mr. X’s name, very symbolic! It’s unfortunate that I spent most of the book jotting down things I had problems with. Please don't be discouraged by my review, though. Give it a shot! After all, I am an oddball... The second I saw the blurb for this book, I knew I had to read it as soon as I could get my grabby little hands on it. What can I say? I love me a good mindfuck and I really love a good dark romance. While the premise of the book was great, the flow of the story intriguing, and the set up interesting...sadly it just didn't work for me. I can tell you that it could have easily been a solid 4 stars for me, if not for a few things. Unfortunately these few things were integral parts of the plot, and with them lacking it made the entire book fall flat for me. I couldn't help thinking the entire time I was reading it that this book is what would happen if you mixed Hitman with Monsters in the Dark. Bald head, red tie? Now that's not a bad thing necessarily, if only it delivered on the premise... Jay is a stripper and drug user doing whatever she can to get by, including hooking herself out for money to the patrons of the strip club. But one night everything in her life changes in the blink of an eye, with the appearance of a man, a gun, and an no choice. All I wanted was for her to be mine; now I want her to be dead. X was a character that grabbed my interest from the start. I'm talking from the very first chapter. This is no prince charming. He was dark, sadistic, and determined. I've become a monster. I was burned to ashes, along with my soul, but I will rise and make them pay. The author had a very unique writing style that trickle fed the reader bits and pieces of history through a series of flashbacks that were perfectly interwoven into the story. It becomes evident from the first few chapters that X and Jay have some kind of history together. Though Jay doesn't remember, and X is determined to make her pay for it. I won't give you more than that since I don't want to ruin the book and giving anything else away would be a spoiler. What I will tell you are the 3 things that ultimately killed the book for me. 1. X's reasoning behind his revenge. The entire book the reader is led to believe that something horrible happened to X that Jay (view spoiler)[was directly responsible for (hide spoiler)] . With all the bits and pieces of history coming to light, I needed this revelation to be great. Was it? Not for me. It seemed fairly...lackluster...when compared to everything building up to it. I understand why he would blame her (kind of), but to build such an intricate revenge because of it? Meh. 2. The history and character development I NEEDED more from this. The "organization" that X works for, where was the back story on that? I got nothing. It's like they were there and that's it. No rhyme or reason to it. Maybe if I understood more about them and X's (view spoiler)[ parents (hide spoiler)] it would help me get into the story more. I found (view spoiler)[ the back story behind X's parents (hide spoiler)] to be extremely lacking. Aside from telling the reader their profession there was little else that was said. 3. Jay I can't say I ever felt a connection to Jay throughout the entire book. And when the big reveal happened and the entirety of their history was revealed? It pretty much solidified my opinion of her as being a vapid, selfish, and spoiled little girl out for thrills because she had daddy issues. I didn't find her to be an endearing character at all. Combine that with the 2 things I listed above and that's all she wrote. When it comes to a dark romance, I need to LOVE the character. I want to feel my heart bleeding for them. When I don't connect to the heroine, that's never going to happen. I did love the way the chapters were set up to flip between present and flashbacks to the past. It was very intricate, down to the time it takes place. The ending was quite fitting to the story also and one I didn't quite expect. So please don't let my negative review deter you from reading. There were plenty of positive things in the book. Unfortunately, I'm very picky when it comes to my dark romances, so it didn't quite work for me. But it may just work for you. **ARC gifted to Dirty Girl Romance blog in exchange for an honest review** For more reviews visit

With one quick jerk I pull my panties back on, because I don’t want that fucking bastard looking at me. The gun is pointed at him, but my hands are shaking. I’m weak. I hate it. Get over it. This fucking piece of shit deserves to die. The moment he sees the gun his eyes widen and his movement stops. “Get out!” I scream, flicking the gun between him and the door. He scrambles up from the bed and pulls up his pants, making me painfully aware of the fact that he touched me. That my clothes are ripped, and that he was about to stick his junk into me. Fuck, this is fucked up. “I’m not saying it again. Get out or I’ll fucking kill you right now!” I yell. “Okay, okay, I’m going,” he says, walking around the bed. I follow his every step, vigilant, because I know pigs like him can’t be trusted. He could still change his mind and try to force himself on me again. I’ve seen it before with another girl at the club. One time this girl was flirting with a customer and I knew she was taking him over the edge with her lap dance. The edge means they aren’t able to walk away anymore. The men want more, and they won’t stop until they get it. Not all of us are willing to give it, but she was. She wasn’t willing to give up her pussy, though. Just like me. We give them pleasure, but the pussy is off limits. Too bad for her she didn’t carry a gun around, unlike me. It was the last day I ever saw her. My anger gets the better of me, because Billy’s face while he tried to push inside me is still imprinted on my retinas. So I bend over and take off my high heels, throwing them at the back of his head. “Hurry up, you piece of shit!” He turns around and rubs his head. “What the fuck? I’m leaving, aren’t I?” “I should kill you for what you did!” As Billy twists the key in the lock, a knock is audible, and he freezes. I keep the gun pointed at his head, air leaving my lungs in rapid breaths as Billy backs away from the door. The door creaks. I’ve never heard it creak before. Suddenly, the door bursts open, a shiny black shoe smashing the lock. I stiffen, chills running down my spine. The leg retreats. A gun appears out of nowhere. A black, velvet-gloved hand holding it. Fingers moving to the trigger. Bang. It’s not loud, like in the movies. It’s a thud, like someone just punched a pillow. The shot is soft, but unmistakably a gunshot. At first there is nothing. Seconds seem like minutes as I stand here trembling with a gun in my hand, watching everything unfold. Fingers shake and breaths falter. Blood pours from his head. Billy falls to the ground. My jaw drops because I can’t believe my eyes. Billy is dead, but it wasn’t me who killed him. The gun fires again and again, two shots, one right between the eyes and one into the heart. Each one pulling me further away from this world. It all feels like a dream, but I know it’s not. I just wish it was so I could force myself to wake from this nightmare. I want to scream, but I can’t. Air is trapped in my throat and it can’t escape. I don’t even know if I should run. I’m frozen in place as the mysterious killer steps into my room and reveals himself to me. A bald stranger wearing a fitted black suit, a white collar contrasting the colorless ensemble. Lines of ink stick out from underneath, tattooed into his skin on both sides of his throat. However, the most striking of all is the x-shaped scar that marks his right eye. A wound seared into his skin ages ago, leaving ruin and havoc on his face. His eye has been replaced with a metallic fake; an eerie warning of the horrible events that he’s involved in. Events that I might get involved in too now. Who is this man that stepped into my room? Why is he here? Can I trust him? His face turns from Billy to me. An eye as black as night stares back at me, unsettling me to my core. At first both his eyes widen, but then they narrow, as if he’s surprised. I shiver, trying to keep the gun steady, but I fail in my attempt to keep it together. The look in his eye reminds me of the stories my nanny used to read to me, stories about the devil. His steps are fast and big as he comes toward me, indifferent about the gun in my hand. “Don’t come closer! I’ll shoot,” I warn, but his hand is already locked firmly around my wrist. He jerks it to the side, forcing me to drop the gun. I yelp as his hand moves from my wrist to my neck, choking me. I wrap my fingers around his, desperately trying to claw my way out, but it’s no use. He’s twice as strong as me, and his will seems unbendable. Terror fills me as the gun in his hand rises to eyelevel. The cold metal feels like a burn against my skin. He looks me straight in the eye, his coal-black eye filled with chilling determination.

Jay is working at a strip club and turning small tricks to support her cocaine habit. Jay finds herself in a difficult situation and in pops a man who scares her more than anyone she has ever met before. There is something about him that is different, but Jay can only think of one thing, escape. The man who takes her captive goes only by Mr. X. He has the hardened look of a killer, because that is what he is. He is an assassin, hired to kill. Wherever Mr. X goes, he leaves death in his wake. If you are lucky, your death comes quickly, but X likes to play and his idea of play will make you scream. Mr. X takes Jay and makes her his captive. She is unwilling and uncooperative. She doesn't know why she is still alive. All she knows is that Mr. X has an interest in her and she sees that as her ticket out of this hell. But she has no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes. This game has been going on for far longer than Jay can even comprehend. As Jay learns more about X, she discovers that he is truly a sadistic and sick man. He wants her to see it all. Jay learns that she may just be safer with the monster she is with than on the streets alone. But hate and love begin to blur and soon, all that they both knew is turned upside down. Mr. X takes Jay to heights that she never dreamed of. She is a slave to his touch and he revels in the pain and ecstasy. Jay soon learns more about he enigma that is Mr. X. She can not help but feel for him. But as her memory starts to unravel, will she ever be able to forgive him? In the end, will she ever be able to love a monster? And can the monster ever really learn to love her back? Mr. X, what have you done... Well, this little gem was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. I have to say that I was blown away. I absolutely loved this story. Jay is a pretty complex character. She was a spoiled rich girl who ends up on the streets and addicted to cocaine. She finds herself at the mercy of a sadist who pushes her to the brink over and over again. The sex in this book is definitely not for everyone. It is hard and rough and there are no safe-words. It is not safe it is not sane and at times it is not necessarily consensual. X has no boundaries with Jay. His only goal, to make her beg him for it. So he takes her to the edge time and again until she can hardly stand it. Mr. X turns out to be way more than what you see on the surface. He is a smart and cunning killer who has mastered the art of manipulation. He is also meticulous in his planning. So when his plan goes out the window, you know you are in for a treat. This book reminds me of Captive in the Dark by C.J. Roberts. It has that same dark and gritty feel that leaves you wondering who to trust and what to believe. There were several twists in this book that took my by surprise. The main male character is an anti-hero and the main female is not all that likeable in the beginning. Despite that or maybe because of that, I was sucked in. It takes a good story-teller to make you read about two messed up people who come together in such a tragic way. Exceptionally dark and twisted...I loved it! **A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.**

Ummm that's about all I got for differences, this was one of those books that seemed to drag on forever. I read it all in one sitting and it seemed like it took days because I felt like it sucked the life out of me, but in reality it only took hours but I was stuck in that no mans land of purgatory where time does not exist but you refuse to put a book down because just maybe something good will happen. I wanted so bad to love this book but I couldn't get past the similarities to Hitman, I pretty much just hated Mr. X and thought Jay was just blah.

Mr. X will consume you, it will devour you and strip away your emotions. You will uncover your own dark fantasies and it will be your blood that flows through the pages as you sink into his world. I for one, took a gigantic leap into it – without a thought of looking back. Jay is a young girl working in a strip club – she’s addicted to drugs and has been reduced to selling her soul to feed her addictions. Although she tries very hard to keep a part of her heart alive, the lifestyle she lives is slowly draining her – leaving her exposed to darkness and ripe for the picking. When a contract is taken out on her to put a brutal end to her life, she finds herself face to face with the devil. No disguise in this devil, he’s a beast pure and simple - and Jay is in his crosshairs. X’s character is unlike no other I’ve ever read – he is the very definition of a dark king. Clarissa Wild weaves an intricate web with this story, I so easily fell into his head. I was living and breathing his character. I relished the kills right along with him, I felt the same glory and satisfaction he did when he exacted his revenge on his victims. I felt his pain and suffering and I caught the glimpses into the soul of the man he thought was lost. Jay and X have a past together, its not one that she remembers due to a previous injury – but he remembers it and her very well. She is his obsession, his hatred of her fuels his every move. He desires her, but more importantly he desires to ruin and break her. As much as he loathes her, he can’t bring himself to end her life. Taking her as his captive, they go on the run together, while he ruthlessly hunts down those that threaten to harm them. If you think this is a book you can figure out – don’t. Clarissa pushes the boundaries with each page and the acts that are committed are shocking, disturbing and for me, one hell of a fucking ride. As their world unravels around them and the enemies press closer – X pulls Jay farther into his world. Awakening her darkness and stripping her emotions away layer by layer. X is such a domineering, passionate, brutal lover – I was left panting and wanting to be the one tied to his bed! Those scenes were completely spellbinding , and definitely disturbing. You’d think it would be too much, but it was perfect in my opinion. An enthralling balance that kept me glued to this book. Will they survive each other? Or will they be the end they can both see coming? I was left guessing until the very last second of this book. Let’s see if you can figure it out. A word from X: “You are my possession, my fixation, my enslavement. You’re bound to me forever.” Get ready for your mind to maddeningly fucked. Clarissa – job fucking well done. By the way, do you like strawberries? You might re-think your answer after you read this book ;) *5 Deliciously Wicked Stars* xo Cassia deliciouslywickedbooks.com

THIS IS IT?" way the suspense of the book all clarified, this was a very enjoyable read. I love me some Dark Romance, after all! It's a bit hard to review this book without spoiling anything but I'll do my best: This is the story of Jay , a stripper and occasionally, a hooker, and Mr. X , who is a trained and professional assassin. X is hired to kill. To kill Jay. Someone from his past. But he doesn't know that when he bursts into her motel room and finds her holding a gun to some guy's head, who had tried to force himself on her. He kills the guy and is shocked when he realizes who his task entitled him to murder. X is filled with hatred, anger, and bitterness and is revengeful towards Jay. He blames her for who, or what, he is now. A monster. But despite everything, when it comes to get the job done, X just can't do it. He can't kill Jay now. He wants her to suffer a little bit more in his hands before he kills her. Jay doesn't understand anything that's happening. She doesn't understand why this man wants to kill her. Or why he hasn't done it already. She doesn't understand how he knows her name. Or why he feels so...familiar. Like she knows him from somewhere... Indeed, Jay and X have a history. A history that X can't forget. A history that Jay doesn't even remember... How she's forgotten everything ruins me. I hate her. I fucking hate her. And I want her to be mine forever. Even if it costs me everything. The flashbacks were pretty successful in getting our curiosity spike with every other page. It was nice to see the softer side of who X was once. I lean in and plant a kiss on top her forehead, and whisper, "Forget. Forget about me. Forget everything. Live your life. I'll watch you from the shadows and keep you safe." She sexual tension was UNBELIEVABLE ! I was shouting "DO IT ALREADY!" for the first %30-40 of the book. "Had a nice trip into subspace?" "Fuck... You..." "Not yet, little bird. Not yet." But once they finally did it... "Yes, Jay. I'm there, in your every pore. Taste me. Feel me. Smell me. Let yourself be taken, because you won't be able to resist once you realize you are mine completely." Especially this line was the highlight of the whole book for me: "I'm not a sprinter, I'm a marathon runner." And the "dirty talk"... I admit I liked it at some parts, but sometimes it made me a little uneasy: "She tastes like a whore. My whore." I gotta admit, I liked X. I didn't exactly "love" him, he definitely can't get into my famous "Top 10 Book Boyfriends" list, but still... "I'm not just a monster, I'm your monster." "You are my possession, my fixation, my enslavement. You're bound to me forever." "Do you see me?" she asks. "I never stopped seeing you." Jay... Jay was okay, I guess. Nothing special, to be honest. << I realize now that she is not the only prisoner in this room. She has stolen what's left of me. >> << I might have won his heart, but I already lost the fight. He's claimed mine too. >>

I just finished Mr. X and I really enjoyed it. I knew going in that it was going to be disturbing but I so enjoyed every bit of it. Jay is a party girl. She knows how to make a man want her. What she doesn’t realize is the consequences of her actions. Here comes X. He is a paid assassin and his job now is to kill Jay. Jay doesn’t understand why this is happening. He is scary and she knows that he means business and will do everything she can to stay alive, even if it means seducing the assassin. I just finished Mr. X and I really enjoyed it. He is torn so he decides to keep her until he can make up his mind. I will say no more, I’m going to keep this spoiler free and you will just have to read and see what happens. Wow. This story had it all. Lust, anger, rage, revenge, hatred. Did I mention most of the seven deadly sins???!! Seriously this is not a story about rainbows and unicorns. This story for me is just about revenge. No matter how you look at it, this book is about getting what you want, no matter what you have to do to get it. I enjoyed it. It was a good plot. It had some mystery to it. The characters were well rounded. I loved how it was in both of their point of views. You really got a feel for the characters and can understand better why they did the things they did. There are always consequences to your actions and I love how that was played into this story. Revenge can be bittersweet. Lies and truths blend into one. What would you believe? X, X, X…..HMMMMMM. He is a dirty boy. I loved him. I know that he is not your typical lets bring him home to daddy type of guy but once you get the full understanding, I feel for him. You know his past. You see his present. Now it’s about knowing what his future will hold. Will Jay be involved? I really liked her. She has a lot of spunk. She did what she had to, to survive. She fought him tooth and nail. Hell, I would too. I wouldn’t have given up. It’s hard though because with the mystery aspect of it to really say more. Again, want to be spoiler free but everything happens for a reason. I will say that DAMN, they just sizzled. It was hot and ON FIRE! Loved every delicious smack! “All I crave is her. All I want is her, completely. I knows she’s only giving it to me because her life’s on the line, but I want to be more than that. I will make it so that she’ll only ever want me, even when she can choose not to. That even if I were tp free her, she’d still come back to me, no matter what. Utter devotion”. “My mistake was loving her. Her mistake was inviting me in. We both should have knows better than to play with fire. And now the burning never stops”. “No’s became yeses until I don’t know the difference anymore. His rule is law. I’m not allowed outside. Death is what follows when I don’t obey, I know that. Ive seen it countless times. And I want to live. However, I’m not so sure anymore that I can live without him”. If you like dark and twisted reads, then this one is for you. I enjoyed it and would read it again. Story 5 Sex 5 Overall 5+++ Reviewed by Beggin (Shay) from Mommy’s a Book Whore

So...where do I start...I am very torn about my review of this book. In some ways I really liked it. The story/plot in itself was very interesting. It had some sadistic scenes that just didn´t really make any sense to me at all and if I would ever experience some of those things, I would never just say almost just ouch! I would probably cry my eyes out even if I would be terrified of getting killed in the process! How tough can one person be! I also found it a bit rushed in parts. I was torn between 2 and 3 stars, but like I said, the story/plot in itself was interesting and I wanted to find out the full story behind it all so that for me deserves 3 stars.

Jay finds herself in the middle of danger when what she thought was a simple handjob turns into a murderer kicking in her door. Facing her own death makes her want to live, at any cost. Is she ready for what mr X is bringing, though? Twists and surprises, smut and suspense in a (very) dark romance with an ever darker Hero. Unlike most of the 'captured female' books I have read, she is CLEARLY very flawed before meeting X. She's strong and resilient and did NOT fold and crumble quickly like many of the other tortured heroes in other books! -X...what can I say about X...I love him. Seriously. He's definitely not the conventional sexy alpha I know I LOVE to read about, but there was just something about him that I found attractive. Yes, he is scarred (physically, emotionally, socially, sexually...the list goes on), but that didn't matter to me. Is he a Q. Mercer? No. But he's sexy in his own way. -LOVED how the past unfolded as we are being introduced to new things going on in the present. Something will happen, and then the next chapter will be explaining what happened in the past that lead to what happened in the present. Instead of getting the whole story of his and her pasts, we get them bit by bit which definitely added to the great flow of this book. what I didn't love -although I loved the back and forth between the past and present...I didn't quite pay attention to the dates in which the story was taking place in italic at the beginning of each chapter, which ultimately confused the hell out of me in the beginning. There are MANY dates written and I found it a bit difficult remembering what happened in which year... Idk, could be because I am a very fast reader that I had a hard time with it...not sure... Overall, great read!! Heading on amazon right now to find more books by Clarissa Wild!

I was really looking forward to reading this and seeing how Clarissa managed a darker story. Sadly I was disappointed. First thing to note was I really didn't like the cover. Clarissa does fantastic covers usually, yet this one just seemed rushed and not up to her usual standard. The writing was very blunt and staccato. She used such short sentences that it seemed to be a book of quotes and therefore the story didn't flow right. I couldn't get involved emotionally in the story as the character's inner dialogues kind of dictated how I should be feeling. Some things just didn't work like the loss of the eye didn't sit right with me as it was unclear what the eye could and couldn't do. Sometimes both eyes could move, then only one but I guess that's nit-picking!! The premise of the story was good but I feel it wasn't executed as well as it could have been. For me, this book mostly missed the mark because of the jerky writing style.

This book was all over the place. I liked some of the time but then wanted to throw my kindle across the room at other times. I had such high hopes for this but it just fell flat for me. I don't know if it was the back and forth between past and present or the lack of conneciton with the characters but it was slow going for me.

I like crazy and this guy for sure delivered. I have a weakness for a bad boy who can't resist the woman that he is trying so very hard to not like--poor guy;) What can I say? He is a crazy hit-man that you don't want to cross and she did--and he can't help but like her anyway. He is a man on a mission so be prepared for one wild and crazy ride.

No, Mr. X is a dark and greedy story of lust, passion, betrayal, lies and survival. The plot revolves around Mr. X & Jay, these two characters who seem to have lost their way somewhere while growing up. One accosted by his past and his family, growing between killings and murders while at the same time learning the ropes of his family business and legacy. The other growing within the walls of a house that felt more like a prison than a home. One with the heart of a rebel and the other with an iron heart. Mr. X is more than just a story of a man who falls in-love with a woman who isn’t meant to be his, this story explores the deep and darkest corners of an assassin’s heart and the sacrifices he had made for the woman he loved. While this story also explores the consequences of these characters decision it also gives the reader the opportunity to experience these characters sacrifices from a different perspective. He grew up from a family who handled the dirty side of politics and any business that required more than just simple negotiations, he grew up to be part of that business, he was punished for his indiscretions, he was forced to forget about her, he was forced to move on. Mr. X is a tortured soul, in more ways than one can imagine. Now that he is a man his business is simple, remove what no longer has value, regardless of who gets hurt or dies. Mr. X shares a past with Jay, as teenagers they explored and did what was forbidden and what they were told could never happen. Attraction, desire, need and attention seem to pull them together but while they knew the consequences of their action would bring terrible results they ignored it. These characters share a past, but for some reason Jay can’t remember who Mr. X is, she feels the attraction and the pull they have for one another, but for some reason or another she just can’t remember him or her life before. Mr. X on the other hand remembers everything about Jay, and his need for her is more than just lust. These two characters are broken, they are flawed but they share the same passion, need and desires. Jay’s life was never perfect but she knows that at some point she took the wrong turn. She doesn’t remember why or how but now her life pretty much depends on the little money she can make and the next high she can manage. This story goes back and forth between these characters, we don’t really know much about either of them and that is perhaps why the story falls short. It isn’t until the very end when we learn what happened to Jay and how she ended up becoming a prostitute, we also learn what Mr. X meant to her and who forced her into the life she now lives. I enjoy dark romance, I like the idea of characters finding redemption and I support the idea of love conquering it all. However, Mr. X fell short for me, yes I enjoyed the action and perhaps that’s probably what I enjoyed the most but when it comes the character’s dialog and interaction I felt it wasn’t enough. The story would’ve been a lot more interesting if we would’ve seen more of Jay’s past and Mr. X current business affairs. We are brought into a conflict and indecision by Mr. X without knowing exactly what was happening. At times I felt I was missing something to then figure out that the characters where going through some flashbacks. Overall the story was good, just not excellent. I believe it could’ve been better if there was a bit more character development, the end was open ended giving the reader the idea that there could be more. This is the first book I read by Clarissa Wild, and even though I didn’t get the WOW factor I expected I will grab another of her book. She as an interesting way of telling a story and her writing is very good.

Heed the warning, this is not a typical love story and I would hardly consider it a love story really. That being said, it is a great, dark, alpha-driven read. I read an alpha book before this and now need a breather from these manly men! Jay is a little girl lost. She is deep in a seedy underworld of sex and drugs, not even looking for a way out. This is her life, she doesn't remember the life she lived before, just that somehow she ended up on the streets and did what she had to do to survive. She is stripping at the moment while doing a few, ahem jobs on the side for extra cash. One night the job got to heavy and X showed up out of nowhere. Mr. X is a guy with some deep seeded problems of his own. He is a bit like the television character Dexter and only targets people that deserve it. He lives by a code, one the organization has given him. X knows he isn't pretty to look at, which is good because he isn't out to make friends. There is only one thing he is out for and that is Jay. Jay and X have a past, one she can't remember and one he remembers all too well. When he started this quest he knew exactly what he wanted from her, now he isn't all that sure anymore. I am going to stop here as to not spoil any plot lines. The book is violent and sexy in that order. While I like me a nice alpha, X was almost too much. I needed a little more teddy bear to show through the gruff exterior. That said, it is a fantastically written story, with twists and turns until the end. Clarissa Wild went dark and did a great job of it. X is one of those guys you hate to like (not love, as I just couldn't muster that up for him). It's a stand alone with an epilogue, however if you are looking for hearts and flowers, this isn't the book for you.

A beautiful love, dark and twisted. We are all born innocent until life ruins it. For me, that's what this book portrayed. The life we're forced to endure shapes us. For Jay and X, it wasn't pretty. As a matter of point, it was probably as screwed up as it could get. They had each other. Was it messed up? Yeah. Did I cringe? Oh, yeah. But, no matter how messed up they are, it's beautiful thing. I was hooked from page one. At 25%, I told my husband, "You have to read this book." At 96%, I release A beautiful love, dark and twisted.
